Last weekend wrapped up the Summer Cup games for our Senior Women's squad as well as our Men's Championship team. Our lads finished the Cup placed 5th on the ladder, while our Women's team remained on the bottom throughout the tournament. Both senior squads had plenty of positive aspects to take away from the tournament though, and we're looking forwards to watching our Pirates take on the competition in the season proper.
The Men's Championship Summer Cup game on Saturday was held at KGV, where our lads took on Hobart United FC. Jake Stuart opened the scoring very early in the game, but unfortunately the opposition equalised before the half time whistle. The remainder of the game was a hard-fought and tense battle. Fergus Bridge managed to add his name to the score sheet, and when Ned Goodsir scored in the 83rd minute our Pirates may have thought the pillage was over. However, two very late goals from Hobart United equalised the score and sent the game to penalties where our Pirates were ultimately victorious, with Player of the Match, Jasper Gardner, slotting away the winning goal in sudden death. The final score was 3-3 with Taroona FC winning the penalty shootout (5-4).
Our Women's Summer Cup game at D'Arcy Street may have felt doomed from the start, with a noticeable lack of players due to unavailability and injuries. However, our Pirates embodied the classic "never say die" attitude and dug deep to hold the opposition at bay even though they were a crew member (or two) short at times. After a trio of goals to South Hobart in the first half, our senior squad recomposed themselves and took to the field with a renewed grit and determination, conceding again only in the 87th minute and closing the game with a 0-4 loss.
Well done to both our Senior teams for rising to the challenges that last weekend provided! We have a string of home games starting next weekend, so we look forward to seeing all our wonderful supporters, volunteers, and players at Kelvie soon.
