Could our lads be having any more of a dream start to the year? Our Men's Championship team are about to enter the 2022 season completely undefeated, after backing up their Friday night win with a show-stopping victory on Monday morning.
Friday evening saw the lads take on a feisty Metro FC out at North Chigwell. Goals from Fabian Natoli and Fergus Bridge saw Taroona FC winning the knockout round of the Lakoseljac Cup quite comfortably. Like magpies hunting to expand their collection of silverware, our Men's team now looks to take on South Hobart in the Laka Cup Round of 16, which will be played over the Easter weekend.
Tracking back to what was possibly the main event of the whole Grand Final Day at Darcy Street, South Hobart proved to be no match for our Summer Cup Champions. A fresh 10:30am kick off might have slightly affected our salty sailors. Although our pirates had some decent and early chances, it was the opposition who first found the back of the net within only two minutes of the game. An equaliser came in the 28th minute when Fergus Bridge managed to put the finishing touch on a cheeky corner-to-header combo, chest-bumping the ball past a floundering keeper and defender.
The score remained level at half time, and it was a young Noah Gardner who converted a whopping assist from the halfway line to give us a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. The remainder of the second half posed some good scoring opportunities for our Pirates, but they were unable to take the loot. During the dying moments of regular time, South Hobart managed to slip an unexpected goal through, sending both teams into two nail-biting periods of extra time. Though no goals were added to the scoreboard in this stretch, the game remained far from uneventful and was filled with plenty of action, as well as some hearty, yet risky, contests.
With extra time failing to produce a winner, it was up to star goalkeeper, Isaac Scott, to put those long limbs to use and carry his team to victory. In an incredible effort, Scott pulled out all the stops and saved 3 penalties to secure the trophy. A big congratulations to the 2022 Summer Cup Champions on behalf of the whole Taroona FC crew.
