Our Men's Championship team returned to their winning ways last weekend, with a 2-1 victory against their Summer Cup rivals, South Hobart. An early goal by South could have rattled the lads, however Jake Stuart was able to level the score shortly afterwards, and Charlie Howcroft scored the match winner in the 66th minute. Head Coach, Llewyn Tubb, says, "It was nice to bounce back from last week. The team produced a strong second half performance to secure our first win of the season against quality opposition. I was impressed with Fergus Fletcher’s composed display at right back and Charlie Howcroft didn’t disappoint with a perfectly executed cartwheel to celebrate his winner. We’re looking forward to welcoming a newly formed Hobart City Beachside to Kelvedon next week."
In WSL news, our top Women's side has struggled to put their strongest 11 on the park consistently, resulting in a big loss against Devonport (0-7) in their first match of the season. The first half provided a glimmer of hope, as our Pirates fought hard to keep the score at 0-2, but ultimately the Strikers came back into the game with all the firepower they needed to demolish the Pirate ship. A scheduled match against South Hobart this weekend has now been postponed due to numerous COVID cases in the team, we wish all those affected a speedy recovery. Our Women's Championship team enjoyed a bye in R2, while our Women's Championship 1 team were busy producing the goods at Lightwood Park. Two goals by Adelle Massom in the first half secured the 2-0 win over the Kingborough Lions.
Unfortunately our Men's Championship 1 team couldn't hold on to their half-time lead of 1-0, and finished the game defeated 2-3 (Henry Ralph, 1, Fabian Natoli, 1). Our Men's Championship 3 side pulled out all the stops against Kingborough at home last weekend. Returning to the field for the second half with the score level at 1-1, our Pirates managed a convincing 4-2 win against the opposition (Kaspar Deane, 1, Thomas Friend, 1, Joshua Hniat, 1, Joe Mulcahy, 1). Wednesday night saw our U18's Taroona FC Black defeated by South Hobart Red 1-11, with team Captain, Nick Harnwell, producing his side's sole goal. They now look to take on yet another South Hobart team next Wednesday at Bell Street.
