On Friday night our Championship Women’s team lost 0-3 to Olympia. We conceded all 3 goals in the first half but maintained a clean sheet in the second half, with outstanding performance from Sumali Buamee playing as striker. Head Coach, Tayla Thomas also commented on some very solid defending from Chloe Williams, and says “We played some great football and created great attacking opportunities in and around the box. Another shout out to ‘Ol safe hands Charlotte’ with another solid performance in goals!” Our Championship Pirates have another fixture under the Friday night lights tonight when they take on University.
While our Women’s Social L2 game was postponed until this weekend, our Women’s Social L1 Pirates nabbed the spoils when they played Glenorchy Knights, winning the game 2-1 after an early goal by Sophie Booth, and Holly Mayo sealing the deal in the second half. A late goal by the opposition wasn’t enough to rob our Pirates of this victory! Our Men’s Social L3 Pirates also nabbed a win against Metro FC, with goals thanks to Alex Edwards and Kaspar Deane.
Saturday’s saw our Senior Men’s teams battling it out against New Town at Sherburd Park. Our Championship 1 team unfortunately lost 2-0 after a resolute first half. Our Championship Pirates won a convincing 6-0 match with a hat trick from Sam James and the other scorers being Declan Taylor, Ned Goodsir and Toby Fleming. Head Coach, Scott Gannon, says “After a disappointing display against South East United, it was definitely back to the drawing board and a time for reflection. After a shift in formation and a few personnel changes, the boys showed exactly what they’re capable of, with an extremely dominant performance. Our application all week was spot on and we got exactly what we deserved out of the game.” Looking ahead to this weekend’s fixtures, Scott says “We now face a young and spirited Glenorchy Knights, who will be desperate to secure their first win of the season. However, if we apply ourselves and take the same mindset and approach into this week, as we did last week, then I am confident of another favourable result. We have a few injuries to manage and players unavailable but I am optimistic that we will put a strong team out on the park. I look forward to seeing a healthy crowd in attendance this weekend, before a weekend off and mini break.”
Saturday also saw our WSL Pirates hosting a traveling Launceston United side at Lightwood Park. After an incredibly competitive first half, which saw a breakthrough of the season as Madi James scored our Senior Women’s first goal of the season, our Pirates could not keep up the same intensity in the later stages of the game, ultimately losing 1-6. On Sunday our U18 Girls team showed a great result against their Clarence Zebras counterparts on Sunday, with a lone goal by Phoebe O’Brien winning the game for the young Pirates. Super Coach, Maddy Lane says: “The girls played a strong game with equal action at both ends of the park, but [we] were able to secure the win. The team are keen to take on Clarence again this weekend and improve their score.”
With games being spread out on all 3 days, let’s get on out this weekend and support our teams! Best of luck to all our Pirates.
