As written by Stef Stimson: “It’s been coming…. all season the team has been growing and the scent of victory has been getting stronger.
Training against the champ men on Thursday was excellent prep for the physicality that we took to Riverside. The team were hungry for victory and fired up even before the start.
After an even first 30, the team lifted in the last 15 to finish the half on a high. They returned to the field fired up and with the welcome return of 2nd half sub Maeve Dunbabin, the tempo rose. But with Madi J’s searing long range shot hitting the crossbar - was it going to be another example of “so close”…. ?
Not a chance. The tempo remained and the hunger grew - there was no way the pirates were leaving the field with anything else than a victory. A stoic performance by Izzy between the sticks ensured a clean sheet was the first part, then…. Goals from Liv (71’), Maeve (81’) and Maddie Lane (85’) pouncing on a suburb rebounded Jade header gave the team a well deserved and hard fought victory.
Although Wilsy was not able to be physically there for the game, she was watching the feed, texting throughout and very involved from afar. No one works harder than her in this team and every week she believes in her team that a victory is coming. And this week it did so it was so fitting she was ‘virtually’ brought into the club rooms for a rousing rendition of the club song - not sure it has been sung with such passion. Go Pirates!”
A huge congrats to our WSL team, and a big thank you to Stef for stepping in as Coach and supporting our WSL Pirates in a momentous game.
In other news, our Men’s Championship Pirates are back to smashing goals as they dominated the Glenorchy Knights 9-1 on Saturday.
Coach Riley Pitchford says, “The Champ Men continue their chase for the title with a decisive 9-1 win over Clarence Zebras. With the squad only a point behind league leaders, South East, the team have entered every game with a ‘must win’ attitude. This week proved no different, with braces from Toby Fleming and Sam James, backed up by goals from Fabian Natoli, Oliver Maxwell, Arlo Milne, Matthew Chapman and Will Stalker. A highlight of the game for many was watching Liam ‘Queechy’ Ransom sky a penalty kick well over the crossbar.”
Our Women’s Championship team suffered a 1-6 loss at Olympia, with Layla Sherman scoring the team’s lone goal. Meanwhile at Sherburd Park, our Women’s Social League 1 team took on the Glenorchy Knights in a very close battle. Daisy Parsell opened the scoring only 3 minutes in, and Lauren Jarvis followed suit mid-way through the half. For a moment it seemed our Pirates would dominate the game, but two quick concessions saw them heading into the second half with the score tied at 2-2. Another 2 goals were scored by the opposition, but our Pirates dug deep with their ’Never Say Die’ attitude, and nearly brought the game back around. Sophie Booth’s goal in the 81st minute had us hoping we could nab some points, but it was not meant to be.
We wish all our teams the best of luck this weekend, make sure to get on out and support our Pirates!
