The weekend of football kicks off tonight at Empire Couriers Park, when our Senior Men’s teams take on Olympia. Last week saw our Championship 1 Pirates claw back from a 0-3 deficit, with Club stalwart Llewyn Tubb joining the game and taking control of defence, like a master commander steering the ship through turbulent waters. Our lads were able to claw back onto the score board and managed a 3-3 draw. The Men’s Championship game was a little more one sided, with Sam James smashing away an impressive 5 goals, contributing to the 9-0 smashing. They now look towards tonight’s game, with Head Coach Riley Pitchford saying: “Every game is a must win as we continue our chase of league leaders South East United from a solitary point behind. Our current obstacle is a formidable Olympia Warriors who have won 4 of their last 5 games. Last time we clashed, Taroona managed to secure a victory with a late goal just before the final whistle. I’m confident that the team will put out a great performance and hopefully take home the 3 points.” Best of luck tonight!
Last Friday saw our Women’s Championship team take on University FC at Sherburd Park. Sumali Buamee was a clear stand out player filling in as goalkeeper, making some phenomenal diving saves and putting her body on the line on more than one occasion. An exciting solo run from halfway in the opening minutes of the game saw star striker, Leyla Sharman, sink a goal into the opposition’s net, but unfortunately our Pirates were not able to keep up the scoring momentum and ultimately suffered a 1-8 loss after a flurry of goals in the 2nd half. They played valiantly, never giving up throughout the whole 90 minutes, and now have a week’s rest before returning to League games next Friday.
In our Social Women’s game, our Pirates entered the 2nd half with a fighting mentality, being 0-3 down. Daisy Parsell was able to put away a goal in the 50th minute, and the defence was able to prevent any more opposition goals, however the game ended 1-3. In WSL news, we welcomed the Devonport Strikers to KGV. A competitive 90 was played, however a string of 1v1s allowed the opposition to take the game 0-4. Our WSL Pirates now look to stealing points off South Hobart FC at Darcy Street on Saturday.
Best of luck to all our teams and players this weekend!
